Le Grand Chai Medoc 2005
Le Grand Chai Medoc 2005 - £9.29
Price on from Laithwaites.
Laithwaites are proud to have finally realised a long-held ambition by renting a beautiful old 'Chai' on the quayside at Castillon in Bordeaux. It allows us to cherry-pick individual vats of the finest liquids ... then age them to add complexity .. and still be able to offer them to you at remarkably low prices! The space offered us by 'Le Chai au Quai' (pronounced 'Shay OK') meant we could race this fantastic Medoc, from the glorious 2005 vintage, into fine new oak and tuck it away just for Laithwaites customers. But there's not much to go round - just 80 barrels - so snap it up quickly! ''Complex with blackcurrant, plum and cassis fruit flavours and a firm, smoky oak structure. Ready for release in mid-July. To 2013.''

Laithwaite Semillon
Laithwaite Semillon - £35.94
Price on from Laithwaites.
This delicious Semillon was bottled at our beautifully refurbished 19th century cellar and mini-winery Le Chai au Quai on the banks of the Dodogne. The wine's a thoroughbred beauty ... partly because, again, we've thrown the most expensive of everything at it, and partly because Bordeaux 2006 is an even better year for white wines than the much-lauded 2005. Pure Semillon is as classic in Bordeaux as Sauvignon in Sancerre and Chardonnay in Burgundy. When Laithwaites first started hunting for wines here (some 40 years ago!) there was more white wine than red. Hard to imagine now, after growers realised there was a fortune to be made selling reds overseas. The beloved Bordeaux Semillon disappeared from many vineyards ... we've been fighting its corner ever since ... So, our trophy-winning Bordeaux winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua set out to track down the tastiest Semillon grapes. Following leads and tip-offs, tasting grapes off the vine, he tracked down two precious batches and took them back to the Chai ready to transform them into this sumptuous white. ''Rich, glowing gold with lively aromas of citrus, nectarine, honey and toasty oak. Deliciously rounded, with layers of juicy lemon, pear and apricot giving way to fine, moreish oak on the finish. Perfect lightly chilled and served with grilled salmon.''

Puy de Val VdP D'Oc
Puy de Val VdP D'Oc - £94.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Officially opened in the early Summer of 2007, Le Chai au Quai (pronounced 'Shay OK') is a wonderful old warehouse on the quayside at Castillon, Bordeaux, where we make and age exclusive parcels of wine in order to be able to offer them to Laithwaites customers at not-so-exclusive prices! Englishman Mark Hoddy is famed for producing full-throttle reds at his top Roussillon estate. His fans include Jancis Robinson MW and his neighbour Michel Chapoutier, maker of the world's most famous Syrah ... so it's a real coup to have him on board at the Chai! Having also worked wonders with Syrah (Shiraz) in Australia's McLaren Vale, Mark knows just how to maximise the grape's natural power. Puy de Val is everything Mark is about - inky black Syrah (so rich in flavour) from ancient, high-grown Roussillon vines. He has used all his local knowledge to scout out parcels of the best 2006 fruit and all his skill to carefully oak-age the wine at the Chai. Amazing for the price! ''Inky black with intense aromas of cassis, liquorice and smoky vanilla. Powerful, smooth, not a rough edge in sight. Very long. This is terrific.''

Laithwaite Semillon 2005
Laithwaite Semillon 2005 - £7.55
Price on from Laithwaites.
Pure Semillon is every bit as classic in Bordeaux as Sauvignon is to Sancerre and Chardonnay to Burgundy ... ''Laithwaites shows what can be achieved when Semillon stands by itself'' (Financial Times). And the 9th vintage just confirms the fact. The grapes come from Bordeaux's best vintage in ''10, 50 or even 100 years'' (Decanter) and Monsieur Menguin's old, hilltop vines in the historic Entre-Deux-Mers region. Ageing took place in new oak barrels and Jean-Marc Sauboua of Laithwaite Sauvignon (and Haut-Brion) fame the winemaking expertise. Honeyed, glowing gold with lively aromas of citrus, nectarine and toasty oak. Deliciously rich, with layers of juicy lemon, pear and apricot giving way to moreish oak on the finish. Luscious chilled and great with food.
