Caro, Domaines Barons Rothschild (Lafite) and Nicolas Catena 2004
Caro, Domaines Barons Rothschild (Lafite) and Nicolas Catena 2004 - £25.00
Price on from Laithwaites.
Argentina's 'Grand Cru' from the winemakers behind world-famous Chateau Lafite and Argentina's renowned Catena family. Caro is to Argentina what Super Tuscans are to Italy. A blend of the finest local grape with the King of international varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon. Caro is delicious proof that in the hands of a master, Argentina's vine paradise can produce exceptional fine wines - intense, red and black fruit flavours with hints of sweet spice wrapped in smooth creamy oak. The idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite and the Catena family was first mooted in 1988. Both partners brought much to the party. The Catena family has produced wine for three generations. Consequently, it was able to draw on its vast knowledge of the high altitude terroirs of the Mendoza region as well as its passion for Malbec. DBR-Lafite contributed its centuries-old skills in growing, vinifying and ageing great Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as its know-how in blending different grape varieties to produce one wine that is greater than the sum of its parts. The first vintage was produced in 2000 to instant acclaim. The 2004 is a deep and serious wine with classic bramble, cassis and cedarwood complexity. Powerful yet smooth and silk it I best enjoyed with roast beef, Spring lamb or wild venison.

Blanc Neuf La Bastide 2006
Blanc Neuf La Bastide 2006 - £8.39
Price on from Laithwaites.
Proudly showing its 'Best-in-Class' accolade, this brand new, golden white has real Grand Cru pedigree. It's made by Olivier Bayle (ex Lafite Rothschild!) and is so much like white Chateauneuf-du-Pape that our staff call it 'Baby Beaucastel Blanc' (a nod to the region's top estate). Olivier's big, rich reds have always been a huge hit - which is why he was delighted to take up our challenge to make a white every bit as serious. And what a triumph! A classic Rhone blend - Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne - barrel-fermented to add toasty richness to the crisp peach and apricot. ''This is beautifully balanced and creamily textured wine with an alluring, peachy nose and succulent honeysuckle and pear palate. A grand wine designed for fish main courses or roast pork, it is a real treat.'' Matthew Jukes

There is real quality all around this wine which has been crafted with the same sort of attention to detail as a great claret. In fact, not only has winemaker Olivier Bayle had experience making wine at Chateau Lafite Rothschild, but consultant winemaker is none other than Georges Pauli - winemaker of cru classe Chateau Gruaud Larose.

Reserve de Gassac 2006
Reserve de Gassac 2006 - £7.15
Price on from Laithwaites.
Aime Guibert's Mas de Daumas Gassac shot from obscurity 25 years ago to lead a quality revolution in southern France. His wines were hailed as 'a miracle' and experts debated whether his red was more like Lafite or Latour. ''Reserve de Gassac is made with the same pride and care as our Grand Vin. I'm proud to present these new vintages!'' - Aime Guibert. This is the fifth and most accomplished vintage yet of rich, great value Reserve de Gassac red. The superb 2006 conditions have given this wine superb concentration and complexity (it actually impressed us even more than the mighty, expensive Grand Vin). Aromas of blackberry and spice, bags of ripe blackfruit flavour, earthy richness and a lingering finish.

Chateau Haut-Bages-Liberal 2004
Chateau Haut-Bages-Liberal 2004 - £19.99
Price on from Laithwaites.
Bordeaux doyen Robert Parker rates this the finest post-war Haut Bages Liberal and we concur. Vineyards next to Chateau Lafite account for the wines prodigious depth of flavour and multilayered complexity. ''Beautifully made (and under-priced) Pauillac, exhibiting a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, liquorice, tapenade, and spice box'' (Parker).

Chateau L'Evangile 2003
Chateau L'Evangile 2003 - £86.00

Founded in 1741, Chateau L'Evagile was actively involved in building the Pomerol vineyard. Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Lafite-Rothschild fame) recently bought the property and subsequently the quality of the wines has begun to soar. Robert Parker even anticipates Chateau L'Evagile will become ''one of the two or three finest wines of the appellation''. ''Plenty of plum and spice with hints of licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish.'' Wine Spectator

Roche Gaillan Medoc Magnum AOC 2000
Roche Gaillan Medoc Magnum AOC 2000 - £22.49
Price on from Laithwaites.
It's rare to see 2000 claret at best, let alone in magnum format! It was a vintage of historic significance and fabulous quality - a dream end to the century for the winemakers of Bordeaux. Seven years on and of the few bottles still left unopened, most are gathering dust in the cellars of millionaire wine lovers and collectors around the world. That's why we were so delighted to have discovered this small parcel of rare, top quality 2000 vintage Medoc in even rarer magnums. ''It is impossible to think of any vintage since 1990 that has produced so many delicious wines'' Jancis Robinson MW ''In 2000 there were fabulous Merlots and profound Cabernets ... in short it is a phenomenal year'' Robert Parker Roche Gaillan 2000 skilfully combines 70% Cabernet with 30% Merlot from Bordeaux's 'left bank' - home to such prestigious estates as Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Chateau Latour. The large format bottle (1.5 litres) has ensured the wine's graceful evolution to its current state of perfect maturity. Brick red with an amber rim. Evolved and complex aromas of blackcurrants, damson plums, liquorice root and mocha. Medium-bodied with fully ripe black fruit and supple tannins. Serve with roast red meats, feathered game or fine English cheeses.
