1-2-1 Nutritional Consultation with Dr Gillian McKeith

JoJos - Whitstable, Kent

Description

Some of the best contemporary tapas this side of Barcelona in a suburban shopping parade on the Kent coast? Believe it. The kitchen and dining room are one and the same, it’s unlicensed, and with enough space to squeeze in just 20 or so people, booking is essential. Ebullient Nikki Billington and partner Paul Watson (she cooks; he handles the front) do everything right. Begin with cold plates like fantastic Tuscan salami, progress to irresistible calamari frito and go on to tender slices of cannon of lamb teamed with fresh chopped mint and tatziki, haddock goujons, grilled sardines, Greek goat’s cheese with candied pear, dolmades, hummus, patatas bravas…Paul will suggest three tapas a head is enough (and they are sized for two sharing) but there really is no getting around it, the food is too damn good to stop. The place feels good, too – it’s where strangers become friends and the low bills are always welcome. (N.B. Don’t forget to look at the blackboard menu – that’s where most of the best fish dishes are.)

Not Open Lunchtimes... - review added on Thu 12th Jun 2008

This restaurant may be as good as the review above asserts. I cannot say since having travelled to Whitstable I found it shut on a Thursday lunchtime. Also the phone was left "off the hook" until the afternoon, when they finally answered it and confirmed that they do not open on weekday lunchtimes. Though even their own website says both that they do, and that they don't..
