Gastro has been a Clapham institution for years. A traditional French bistro style works extremely well. Packed to the gills at the weekends, the place is kicking. Sadly, in the last couple of years, the food has gone downhill a bit, while prices have moved in the other direction.Still great fun.

Well, I should hold my hands up and admit that going to a French restaurant and being vegetarian is asking for trouble, but at least you expect that what vegetables you get to be a pleasant meal - in Gastro, well, far from it, a congealed bowl of somekind of vegetable 'goo' was disgusting, bland and what's more they wanted £10 for it! Sans rien!! and this was whilst cramped into the corner of a large communal table without a hope in hell of getting any service. This is your archetypal trendy bar/restaurant where you get low grade food, low grade service and high rate prices. And then they expect a tip... I'll give them one, there is a plethora of other restaurants in Clapham, so buck your ideas up.

Crap or cracking - review added on Fri 16th Dec 2005
I've been to Gastro a few times and it's been like a different restaurant on every occassion. On a busy saturday night the food and service has been faultless (besides the unavoidable 'you dirty cretinous english' approach from the staff, but this is part of the charm). The moules marinier can be the best outside of brittany, infact everything i've eaten there has been good (not always excellent) it's just sometimes the service is appauling.. which at their prices just isn't acceptable. No chance i'd ever tip there.
