Customer Reviews for San Carlo - Bristol

Watch Out! - review added on Tue 9th Mar 2004

For the second time in a row I've been ripped-off by San Carlo:Watch out! They add 10% to the bill and still offer you space on your credit card voucher for a gratuity. Make sure you're reasonably sober when paying. I asked for a bottle of 'cost-effective' Chianti at £16 last night and received their most expensive version (£35 and not worth it). It arrived (suspiciously) in a carafe, so that I didn't/couldn't check what it was, and they effectively accused me of lying when, on paying the bill, I pointed out that I had asked for something different. It'll be a long time before I return there. The meal was OK but nothing special. Fortunately the company was excellent and more than made up for the rip-off.

Customers beware! - review added on Thu 28th Apr 2005

Average food and overpriced wine only let down by the appallingly slow and surly service. Arrogance with excellence I can understand but with mediocrity like this...? They must rely on one-time passing trade because they can never attract repeaters. Find another Italian restaurant in Bristol - any other Italian restaurant in Bristol

Don't bother - review added on Sun 13th Aug 2006

The main course and wine was delicious, but the service apart from one waitress was from surly, disinterested waiters. The mozzarella in our starter was off. If the service had been any good we might have mentioned this but were too terrified as to how such miserable people would react when the mere act of ordering caused them to roll their eyes at us. This was a very expensive meal - (for a 3 course meal with wine and tip for 2 people coming to just over £100) - and as such just absolutely inexcusable.

Excellent - review added on Fri 27th Apr 2007

I have eaten at San Carlos in Bristol around 6 or 7 times over a period of 4 years. I have always found the service to be excellent and have always been well looked after.Yes it is expensive, but very exclusive and it has the best in terms of variety menu I have come across.

My husband and I visited San Carlos last night for the first time and had a wonderful meal. The food was excellent and the waiters attentive and polite. It was more expensive than some restaurants but if you are looking for something special - it was our wedding anniversary - then we thoroughly recommend it.

Nice food but measly portions and bad attitude - review added on Sun 28th Oct 2007

About 10 of us went here on a friends birthday recently. As I was just having a main course, I asked to pay for a full portion of vegetables with my meal rather than sharing. The waiter said yes (in a dismissive tone) then proceeded to dole out vegetables to each person like a school dinner lady. Each person ended up with 2 or 3 tiny potatoes and a tablespoon of veg. I reminded him that I had ordered a portion of vegetables and he totally ignored me - no doubt hoping I would still be hungry after the meal and pay for a pudding. Had it not been my friend's birthday I would have complained, and not paid the tip. As it was, the tip was sneakily added to the bill and had I not spotted this, they would have conned another £30 out of our party. The food itself was nice, but spoiled by the appalling service. The place was full of large groups of people celebrating birthdays etc, and I'm sure the staff only get away with such rudeness because people don't want to make a scene and ruin their friends' special occasion. The place was beautifully decorated but too crowded (they really pack 'em in here), and I thought too bright.
